Publix spokesman Lee Brunson said the company has a strong growth plan and that although it was too early to speculate on a purchase of either chain, Publix would certainly be interested in looking at them, reported the Associated Press.

Joyce Smart, a spokeswoman for Bruno’s and Bi-Lo said the two chains have attracted a lot of interest from potential buyers.

“We have an established process to determine the interest of potential buyers. It is our policy not to comment on prospective sales activities,” she was quoted by AP as saying.

Bruno’s, which has 178 stores, and Bi-Lo, which has 292 stores, were put up for sale earlier this month by Dutch retail group Ahold.
