The low-carb trend has peaked in the US according to several reports.

The percentage of people following diets like Atkins and South Beach is declining, from 9% in January to 4.6% in September, according to the NPD research group.

Weekly book sales of the South Beach Diet slowed to about 20,000 in early October, down from around 70,000 during its peak in early March, according to Nielsen BookScan.

Food sales aimed at low-carb dieters are also sluggish, rising only 6.1% during the three months ending in September, down from triple-digit gains in the previous 18 months. Due to stiff competition from the growing number of low-carb products, Atkins Nutritionals Inc. hired a turnaround specialist and warned of job cuts.
