Following successful trials, beef supplier Rochester Meats Co revealed that it would be supplying irradiated ground beef to the US foodservice industry within the next couple of months.
Karin Grzanek, vice president of quality assurance, commented: “We feel we want to be proactive and have an irradiated product to offer to our customer.” She added that the company is engaged in finalising marketing details.
Rochester’s products are not sold within supermarkets or grocery stores.
Irradiation occurs as a safety measure at the end of the production line. Sauk Rapids-based Huisken Meats was the first producer to offer irradiated meat to the public just over a year ago. There is resistance to irradiated foods in some countries.
