Safeway said Edwards will oversee the company’s finance, investor relations, information technology, real estate and legal functions and will report directly to CEO Steven Burd.


Edwards most recently served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Maxtor Corporation, a California-based supplier of hard disk drives.


Safeway announced in December that its CFO Vasant Prabhu would be leaving the company at the end of the year to take up the position of CFO at Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
