Sara Lee Corporation announced yesterday that its Board of Directors has appointed Mark J. McCarville senior vice president, corporate finance, and promoted Ann E. Ziegler to senior vice president, mergers and acquisitions, effective immediately. These appointments are designed to reinforce the company’s newly reshaped vision announced in May 2000.

McCarville, 54, who has more than 30 years of financial experience – 25 with Sara Lee – will assume this newly created position. Consistent with Sara Lee’s plans announced earlier this year to reshape its business portfolio and its business organization, McCarville’s position will optimize the strategic effectiveness of the company’s tax and treasury activities worldwide. McCarville will report to Executive Vice President and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Cary D. McMillan.

With her promotion to senior vice president – mergers and acquisitions, Ziegler, 42, will help lead the company’s reshaping of its business portfolio, a key component of its new strategy to focus on three consumer packaged goods segments through selective acquisition and divestiture activity. Ziegler, who has seven years of merger and acquisition experience at Sara Lee, will report to C. Steven McMillan, president and CEO, Sara Lee Corporation.

Ziegler began her career at Sara Lee Corporation in 1993 as assistant counsel. In 1994, she was promoted to executive director – corporate development, and in 1997 she was appointed a vice president of the corporation. Prior to joining Sara Lee, Ziegler was with the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Ziegler earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary and a juris doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School.

McCarville joined the company in 1976 in the treasury department, where he rose to the position of vice president and treasurer. In 1986, he was named vice president of corporate development, and in 1990 he was promoted to senior vice president, corporate development. McCarville began his career in 1968 as assistant national bank examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department in Chicago. In 1972, he joined the American National Bank as a business services officer.
