Representatives from US grocery chains Kroger’s Ralphs, Safeway’s Vons and Albertsons, and from local unions representing striking grocery workers, have held four days of secret, informal talks that ended without finding a resolution to the ongoing grocery strikes in Southern California.

The various parties met at a secret location without a federal mediator in the hope that a change of atmosphere might help produce a settlement, reported Dow Jones International News.

The talks, which ended on Sunday, were described by Ellen Anreder, a spokeswoman for the United Food and Commercial Workers union, as intensive and off the record.

The three-month-long labour dispute centres on attempts by employers to increase employees’ contributions to rising health care costs.
