Sargento Foods Inc. of Plymouth, Wisconsin is voluntarily recalling 8-ounce packages of Sargento Fancy Shredded Mozzarella with code dates 19OCT01 and 20OCT01 and Sargento 6 Cheese Italian Blend Shredded Cheese with code date 20OCT01 because they have the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term flu-like symptoms, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No other Sargento products are affected by this recall.
This recall is being conducted with the cooperation of the FDA. No illnesses have been reported.
The recalled products were distributed nationally in retail stores. Consumers who have purchased 8-ounce packages of Fancy Shredded Mozzarella or 6 Cheese Italian Blend Shredded Cheese with the above-noted code dates should return the products to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
