“SPREAD THE BREAD,” a new charitable program that plans to donate Peanut Butter and other food products to feed homeless persons, supply school lunch programs, and aid hungry children, was announced today.

Herb Dow, Chairman of Sorrells Pickard Gourmet PeanutButter, and Bryan Corlett, company President, have been developing their “Spread The Bread” concept since their product was launched in Denver last November. “We feel people should not go hungry in this Land of Plenty. Helping is part of the dream that created this company.”

What will eventually become the “Spread The Bread” Foundation, has already made the largest food donation ever to the Oakland City School Lunch Program, which will share more than 19,000 PeanutButter Sandwiches with Oakland’s homeless and Battered Womens’ Shelters. This week, (June 6th), Sorrells and Herb Dow will make a similar donation to the Alameda County School Lunch Program, noting that the first Commercial PeanutButter was made and sold in Alameda, Ca., as early as 1922 by The Joseph L. Rosefield Company, which eventually became the Skippy Peanut Butter Company.

Dow is seeking partnerships with other food companies, that will match donations with their own food products (such as bread and jelly).

Sorrells Pickard, a Country singer and songwriter, is currently travelling throughout California on a ‘Jar-Signing Tour’ of supermarkets. In keeping with the company’s mandate of “Spreading Peanut Butter all Over the world,” Sorrells, like the “Pied Piper of PeanutButter,” is also meeting with officials in school lunch programs.

This month, Sorrells Pickard becomes a sponsoring partner of the Los Angeles Florence Crittenton Center, which has served youth and children for the last 108 years. By donating his Gourmet PeanutButter to the Center, he will help Florence Crittenton and many of its longtime supporters celebrate the opening of their new Community Child Care Center near Downtown L.A.

Dow has been working with other such groups, such as “Bea’s Kids,” a Dallas organization featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which feeds hungry and homeless kids in and around Dallas. Founder Bea Salazar started her program nearly ten years ago, when she brought home a hungry, homeless five year old and fed him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Next day at lunchtime, 13 hungry kids, ages 5 to 11, showed up at her apartment, looking for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Today, Bea’s Kids and her volunteers feed more than 150 children and 80 families daily from their four apartment complexes in Dallas and its surrounding area.

The “Spread The Bread” program began to take shape when the company became a sponsor of this year’s Connie Stevens Ski Extravaganza in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The annual gathering, which this year attracted many sports and entertainment celebrities (including Robert Conrad, Diahann Carroll, Sarah Buxton, Dick Van Patten), sponsors Community Entry Services, which assists individuals with disabilities. Following the event, Dow received e-mails from colleagues in the food business, pledging cash donations to CES.

SORRELLS PICKARD GOURMET PEANUT BUTTER, now with over a million jars sold, is currently available in the eleven Western States, with a National roll-out planned for later this Summer. Meanwhile, Herb Dow, Sorrells Pickard and Bryan Corlett are in contact with many others in the food industry, in hopes they will help “Spread The Bread.”
