Gelato, the new frozen dessert from Häagen-Dazs, has been named the recipient of one of this year’s highest food honours, the annual Golden Shopping Cart Award, presented by the authors of the nationally syndicated “Supermarket Sampler” column.
The Golden Shopping Cart Award, now in its 11th year, recognizes the top new food product introduced into supermarkets this year. The winner is selected by well-known food columnists Bonnie Tandy Leblang and Carolyn Wyman, following an investigation of over 150 new food products.
Several products received the honour of “favourite picks” from the food columnists. Leblang’s favourites were: Kellogg’s Smart Start Soy Protein Cereal; Kettle Sesame Rye, and Sweet Brown Rice & Black Bean Organic Tortilla Chips; Muir Glen Organic Green Olive Pasta Sauce; Bruce’s Sweet Potato Pancake Mix; Athenos Travelers Hummus and Pita; Spice Islands World Flavours Spice Blends; Callard & Bowser Cinnamon Altoids; Frieda’s Pango Mango; and Melissa’s Ready to Eat Soybeans.
Wyman’s picks were: Hellman’s Citrus Splash Salad Dressings; Keebler Harvest Bakery Crackers; Heinz EZ Squirt Ketchup; Uncle Ben’s Spicy Peanut Chicken, and Spicy Thai Style Chicken Noodle Bowls; Pillsbury Chocolate Toaster Strudel Pastry; Hershey’s Candy Bar Factory; Chef Boyardee Homestyle Chicken Parmesan Style Canned Pasta; Boston Market Home Style Oven Roasted Chicken Breast Quarter with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy; and Breyers Ice Cream Parlor.
Leblang, a registered dietician, certified culinary professional and author and Wyman, a self-professed junk-food fanatic, journalist and author, bring differing views to the product reviews featured in their weekly syndicated column “Supermarket Sampler.”
