Minneapolis-based retailer SUPERVALU has announced that John Hooley, corporate senior VP of retail, and CEO and president of Cub Foods, has been promoted to corporate executive VP, and president and COO of SUPERVALU’s retail food companies.

Hooley will have responsibility, effective immediately, for eight of SUPERVALU’s nine retail banners, including Cub Foods, Shop ‘n Save, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Metro, bigg’s, Farm Fresh, Scott’s and Hornbacher’s.

Save-A-Lot will continue to report directly to Jeff Noddle, SUPERVALU president and CEO.

Noddle said: “As we build upon the key progress in Fiscal 2002 where we improved store level execution and sales performance, John will take our current momentum to the next level. John grew up in the grocery retailing business and has the experience and vision to leverage our core competencies in retail as SUPERVALU continues to focus on strengthening its key markets.

“This is a very exciting time for the company. For the first time in our company’s history, grocery retailing represented the majority of SUPERVALU’s overall sales and profits at the end of fiscal 2002. We will continue to invest selectively in the best growth and return opportunities in our key retail markets and accelerate the expansion of Save-A-Lot.”

Hooley said: “I am excited to lead SUPERVALU’s team. We will continue to satisfy the changing needs of the millions of consumers we serve each week with ‘go to market’ offerings tailored to our key markets.”

Hooley’s family founded Cub Foods in 1968, which he joined in 1974 and held marketing and merchandising positions before being promoted to SUPERVALU corporate VP of merchandising in 1991. He was named president and COO of Cub Foods in 1992 and became CEO and president in 1993. Hooley was promoted in November 2000 to corporate senior VP, and CEO and president of Cub Foods.

The company also announced the promotion of Sherry Smith, corporate VP and controller, to corporate senior VP, finance and treasurer. And John Breedlove was promoted from corporate secretary to the additional title of associate general counsel.

“These promotions recognize the superior efforts of these committed individuals,” said Noddle: “As the grocery industry continues to evolve, one of the strengths of this organization is a dedicated group of employees, and an exceptionally dedicated senior management team with a long-term relationship and a wealth of knowledge about the grocery industry.”
