Frito-Lay, the snack-making subsidiary of PepsiCo, has admitted that supplies of its cheesy Cheetos are struggling because the company is anxious to prevent product contamination with genetically engineered corn.

Nationwide recalls of tacos and the shut-down of several processing plants were prompted after the discovery of StarLink and in a bid to avoid a similarly costly fate, Frito-Lay is running thousands of tests every month. Spokeswoman Lynn Markley revealed: “We’ve required all cornmeal to meet all tests, and that’s slowed things down.”

Currently supplies of Cheetos have fallen by nearly 10%, but the company insists that these problems will by ironed out within two weeks.
