SureBeam Corporation, which developed the electron beam technology that safely removes dangerous bacteria from food, today announced that SCIS Food Services, one of the leading providers of convenient meal solutions and ready-to-eat foods, has signed a product testing and collaboration agreement to evaluate the ability of SureBeam(R) technology to enhance quality and shelf life of its ready-to-eat foods.
“We are committed to ensuring that our consumers continue to receive the highest quality and best tasting products on the market,” said Bill Hood, SCIS Food Services’ Senior Vice President – Supply Chain. “By using SureBeam(R) technology, we hope to enhance our existing products with enhanced freshness, safety, and top quality characteristics.”
SCIS operates numerous facilities for salad, bakery, side dish and entree production throughout the USA and Mexico, including the Orval Kent Food Company, Pennant Foods, LaFrancaise Bakery, Ozark Salad Company, Landau Foods and I&K Distributors. SCIS joins a lengthening list of major ready-to-eat food companies who have previously signed agreements with SureBeam in anticipation of the FDA and USDA’s approval of the use of SureBeam’s technology on precooked, ready-to-eat processed foods.
“SureBeam technology provides the highest quality of refrigerated foods without having to resort to freezing or the using of preservatives,” said Larry Oberkfell, SureBeam’s president and CEO. “It’s great for commercial catering and food service, because this allows foods, such as coleslaws and salads, to maintain their freshness along side cooked entrees using just ordinary refrigeration.”
Similar to a microwave oven, SureBeam(R) technology uses ordinary electricity as its energy source to instantly eliminate any harmful bacteria-such as e. coli, listeria, and salmonella–thereby enhancing a food’s quality and extending its shelf life without compromising its taste, texture, or nutritional value. SureBeam processed ground beef and fruit products are already sold across the nation in thousands of supermarkets, as well as by home delivery, direct mail, and through food service.
For its “great step” into food safety, SureBeam’s revolutionary technology is the winner of Food Processing Magazine’s “Innovation Award” for 2001.
SureBeam Corporation was created, built, and launched by The Titan Corporation (NYSE: TTN) in an initial public offering on March 16, 2001.
Headquartered in San Diego, California, SureBeam is a leading provider of electron beam food safety systems and services for the food industry. SureBeam’s technology significantly improves food quality, prolongs shelf life, and provides disinfestation that helps to protect the environment. The SureBeam(R) patented system is based on proven electron beam and x-ray technology that destroys harmful food borne bacteria much like thermal pasteurization does to milk. This technology can also eliminate the need for toxic chemical fumigants used in pest control that may be harmful to the earth’s ozone layer.
