A. Dano Davis, Chairman, announced yesterday that Tillie K. Fowler was elected to the Board of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WIN)

Fowler, a graduate of Emory University college and law school, was active in numerous charitable organizations before being elected to the Jacksonville, Florida City Council in 1985.  She was elected president of the council in 1989.  Fowler was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives 1993 – 2001, where she held many leadership positions including Vice-Chairman of the Republican Conference, Deputy Majority Whip, Member of the Republican Steering Committee and Chairman of the House Page Board.

Davis said,  “As a mother, civic volunteer, city council president and member of Congress, Tillie has an outstanding record of accomplishment and will add significantly to the experience and perspective of our board.”

Fowler has been the recipient of many awards in recognition of her leadership and work on behalf of her constituents including:  the U.S. Navy “Distinguished Service Medal”; the Watchdogs of the Treasury “Golden Bulldog Award”; the Sixty-Plus “Guardian of Seniors’ Rights Award”; and both the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Spirit of Enterprise Award” and the National Federation of Independent Business’ “Guardian of Small Business Award.” In 1996, Fowler was awarded the “Emory Medal” for Distinguished Achievement by the Association of Emory University Alumni. She also received “The Charles Dick Medal of Merit” from the National Guard Association of the United States in 1997.

An active community leader, Fowler is a member of the Board of Trustees, Vice-Chairman, Stennis Center for Public Service, and Board of Visitors for the DoD’s Regional Center for Security Studies. She also has served on the World Golf Village Foundation Board of Directors, St. Vincent’s Hospital Foundation as an Honorary Director and for six years on the Board of Visitors for the U.S. Naval Academy.
