Tricon Restaurants International (TRI), a division of Tricon Global Restaurants, has announced the opening of a landmark restaurant; the new KFC restaurant in Gateshead, UK, is the company’s 11,000th outlet outside the US.
“Our number one goal is aggressive global expansion,” said TRI president Pete Bassi: “We’ve achieved two years of record-breaking new restaurant openings. KFC UK has achieved more than five years of double-digit compound growth,” added Bassi.
TRI includes the international operations of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants in over 100 countries and territories, which generate system sales of over US$7.7bn and profits of over US$300m.
In 2001, TRI opened 1,041 new units in international, on top of 929 new restaurants in 2000. TRI is targeting another 1,000 new restaurant openings outside the US in 2002.
Bassi stated, “We clearly have the management, infrastructure, processes and resources in place to grow our international business for the long term.”
In addition to the UK, TRI’s other top growth markets include China, Mexico and South Korea. TRI has more than 600 restaurants in China, more than 400 in Mexico and over 450 in South Korea.
