Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) announced yesterday that it is working with the USDA and is voluntarily recalling selected codes of fully cooked chicken tenderloins and breast strips. The recalled product may contain folded or large overlapped pieces that were not fully cooked as the label states. This problem was identified by Tyson Quality Assurance and there have been no reported illnesses as a result of the under-processed product.

The products were sold both domestically and internationally to foodservice establishments, retail grocers and military commissaries (note: No product was sold to warehouse or membership clubs). Products were sold under both the Tyson brand and selected customer’s private labels. All the products were produced at Tyson’s Chick’n Quick plant in Rogers, Arkansas, identified by the number P7221 on the packaging.

All of the products listed below produced before February 17, 2001 are being recalled. The production date is shown as the first four digits of the number either stamped or printed on the box or bag the product comes in, just before the P7221. Tyson uses the Julian calendar in its production codes. The following example shows our form:

04710114 P7221 This code is stamped or printed on the packaging. The
master case will also have this code stamped or printed
on the end of the case.

047 Indicates the day of the calendar year (February 16, 2001)
1 Indicates the year (2001) — The year 2000 would be 0, 1999
would be 9, etc.
01 Indicates the production line number
14 Indicates the military hour of production
P7221 Indicates the plant establishment number (Chick’n Quick in
Rogers, Arkansas)

“While only a small percentage of the total production appears to be under-processed, we want to be sure that we are in full regulatory compliance and that all our product meets the high quality expectations of our customers,” said John Lea, Tyson’s Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “We apologize to our customers and consumers for the inconvenience caused by product retrievals such as this.”

Consumers who have any of these products can return them to the point of purchase or direct questions about the recall to Tyson’s Consumer Relations Department at 800 / 233-6332.
