US Foodservice, the US food distribution unit of Dutch retailer Ahold, has said it has gained a key account and realigned its customer mix as part of its previously announced “Road to Recovery” programme.

The company said it has been awarded a new contract, with an expected incremental sales volume exceeding US$150m a year, from Novation, one of the nation’s largest group purchasing organisations for the growing healthcare industry.

US Foodservice also said that it had mutually agreed with catering firm Compass Group USA to terminate the national distribution agreement between the companies. The agreement would have expired on 30 June 2007 if this early termination had not occurred.

“This realignment of our customer mix is part of our previously announced strategy of focusing resources on growing customer segments where we can establish long-term, value-added partnerships,” said Robert Aiken, executive vice president of strategy and governance for US Foodservice.

“With this additional award of Novation business, we expect to have over $2.2bn in annualised sales to the healthcare industry, and we continue to add resources to support our expansion in this attractive specialty sector,” Aiken said.
