The National Milk Producers Federation says that in the first seven months of 2004, imports of butter products rose 89% from last year. According to the US Department of Agriculture, imports through September were 13,888 tonnes, or 101% of the pre-determined safeguard level.
Once total imports reach that threshold, the US government can impose higher-than-normal tariffs on butter products under international trade rules. The government is likely to comply, since it took similar action two years ago, raising safeguard tariffs on American-type cheese products.
Virginia-based NMPF represents nearly 50,000 producers who produce most of the nation’s dairy products.
