National trade body US Apple Association (USApple) was bullish as it reported projected the a smaller than average 2002 US apple crop at 213.3 million bushels.

Despite being the smallest crop since 1986, due to devastating weather in some key growing areas, USApple analysts insisted that fruit quality and the varietal mix of the crop should attract consumers and yield higher returns for growers.

“This year’s crop is a winner for everybody,” said USApple VP James R. Cranney Jr: “There will be plenty of apples to go around.”

As harvest gets underway, USApple also announced plans for the 2002 apple marketing season. A public relations programme will focus on generating media coverage of apples and their health benefits, while a National Apple Month promotion programme aims to create seasonal in-store excitement.

Earlier this month, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast a 219.2 million bushels harvest.
