The US Department of Agriculture has collaborated with the US Department of Homeland Security to plan the development and construction of a research facility to safeguard the American food supply from disease and bio-terrorism.

The new Biological and Agro-Defense Facility will conduct crucial research to safeguard the US food supply, and replace the existing Plum Island Animal Disease Center. As America’s first line of defence against foreign animal diseases, no animal pathogen has escaped from Plum Island in nearly 50 years of operation.

Nevertheless, the Center – under the control Homeland Security for the last two years  – was constructed in the 1950s and cannot meet current research standards.
