Previously, only claims on single serve meat and poultry products were permitted. As a result, the decision ends existing labelling regulations. Effective 30 November, meal-type and main-dish products are now defined as containing not less than three 40g portions of food from at least two food groups.

Nutrient content claims will be based on 100g of product instead of serving size. Meal-type products must weigh at least 10 oz. per serving. Main-dish products must weigh at least 6 oz. per serving. The new regulations are meant to provide consumers with consistent content information and allow them to make valid comparisons among food product categories.
