US retailing behemoth Wal-Mart Stores has selected Grandview, Wash., as the site for a new food distribution centre. The project will result in up to 600 permanent jobs for area residents.
The 880,000ft² facility will begin construction in the fall of 2002 with planned service to stores expected in the fall of 2003.
Initial hiring of approximately 400 area residents is expected to begin in the summer of 2003. Within three years, the distribution centre workforce is expected to grow to 600. More than 90% of the jobs created will be full-time positions.
“The Grandview food distribution centre will provide Wal-Mart the opportunity to better serve the growing number of Wal-Mart customers in the northwest US,” said Rollin Ford, senior VP of logistics for Wal-Mart. “It is a significant project that represents our continued commitment to Washington as a partner in both economic development and community.”
Wal-Mart Stores currently operates 29 Discount Stores, three Supercenters, two SAM’S CLUBS and one distribution center, and employs more than 9,611 associates in Washington.
