Walnuts will soon sport their own US-government-approved endorsement. The country’s Food and Drug Administration will allow a ‘qualified health claim’ to appear on product labels for the nut.
The FDA is trying to use current science-based nutritional information to help Americans make choices to improve their dietary health.
The FDA-approved labels will read, “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 oz of walnuts per day, as part of a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet, and not resulting in increased caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. See nutrition information for fat [and calorie] content.”
While it may sound less direct than “Walnuts prevent heart disease”, walnut producers are nevertheless applauding the FDA move.
