US retailer Winn-Dixie Stores has announced it is to cut an unspecified number of jobs at its corporate headquarters and at division offices.

The company said the job cuts were necessary because of the sluggish economy and weak sales. Winn-Dixie aims to reduce its administrative workforce by 10% through the elimination of positions, some of which are currently vacant, said Joann Gage, vice president of advertising and marketing.

“Deciding to eliminate positions wasn’t a step we took lightly, but we are firmly committed to the profitability of this company,” Gage was quoted by Dow Jones International News as saying.
