The Titan Corporation (NYSE: TTN) announced today that Schwan’s — the nation’s leading distributor of premium frozen foods via home delivery — has debuted a new ground beef product line that uses Titan’s revolutionary SureBeam® technology to eliminate the threat of harmful food-borne bacteria. Introduced in May, the Schwan’s SureBeam-processed ground beef products are now available in 48 states.

“Schwan’s always endeavors to take the lead in providing its customers with the highest quality and most wholesome foods available. Throughout our nation’s history, there have been remarkable advances in food safety — such as the advent of pasteurized milk. Schwan’s has embraced Titan’s patented SureBeam® system because it is a value-added advance that unquestionably serves the best interests of our customers and their families,” said Michael Ziebell, vice president and general manager of Schwan’s Home Service, based in Marshall, Minn.

Just as a microwave oven uses ordinary electricity to irradiate food, causing it to cook, Titan’s SureBeam® electronic pasteurization system uses ordinary electricity as its energy source to instantly eliminate any threat of harmful bacteria in food, enhancing its quality without changing its taste or texture. With this innovative technology, Schwan’s has restructured its ground beef line to include a variety of “thaw and cook” beef burgers and ground chuck. Since these four new products were introduced nationwide, sales within the Schwan’s ground beef product line have increased “more than 20 percent,” according to Ziebell.

“Our increased sales clearly reflect the satisfaction and peace of mind our customers have with this new product line,” said Ziebell. “We have worked diligently to make sure every one of our customers knows and understands the significance of this new technology and why it was important to them and their families. This strong consumer response clearly mirrors their delight and that understanding.”

“This healthy consumer response is just the beginning,” said Larry A. Oberkfell, SureBeam’s President and CEO. “Consumers everywhere want and are demanding the best, highest quality food they can buy for their families. They want to know in advance that the product they are buying is free from the threat of harmful bacteria. They want the same assurance with ground beef that they have enjoyed with pasteurized milk over the last century.”
