India's Uttar Pradesh state has announced it is to set up production plants for cow's milk, cheese and ice cream.

The cabinet sanctioned projects include a cow's milk plant in Kannauj, a cheese factory in Meerut, and an ice cream site in Bareilly. Parag Cooperative Dairy Federation (PCDF) – a state run dairy co-operative – will operate the plants.

The state also proposed to set up a flavoured milk plant in Lucknow.

All the plants will come up within two years after the final tender is announced, a government official said. However, the official did not disclose the size of the investment into the project nor the date of the final tender.

Separately, the state will establish modern greenfield automatic plants with a daily capacity of 2.1 million litres of liquid milk that will come up in Mau in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh is the largest milk producing state contributing 17 per cent of India's total milk production.
