Vietnam could become the world’s largest producer of black pepper in 2003 if current estimations are correct.

The country is expected to produce 66,000 tonnes of the spice next year, a 10% increase from 2002 that will see Vietnam overtake India in the world pepper production rankings. India’s pepper production is expected to fall from 80,000 tonnes this year to just 62,000 tonnes next year.
With 48,000 tonnes of pepper, Indonesia is expected be the world’s third largest producer next year, narrowly beating Brazil, which is expected to produce 47,000 tonnes. Malaysia will remain in fifth position with 22,000 tonnes expected.
Production is of course dependent on the weather and there is a risk of the El Nino weather phenomenon causing drought in parts of Asia.
Vietnam is likely to export 65,000 tonnes of pepper this year including carryover stocks, reported Reuters News.
