Food producers and distributors in Vietnam are to receive assistance in raising their standards because of EUR38m (US$45.34m) lent by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to Germany’s Metro Cash and Carry Vietnam.

This money will finance the construction of wholesale stores in the country’s five main cities of Can Tho, Ho-Chi-Minh-City, Hanoi, Haiphong and Da Nang.

Metro insists its suppliers abide by high quality and cleanliness standards and to help Vietnamese food businesses comply, the chain will also use the money for technical assistance improving fresh food production, transport, distribution and storage. It will also provide training in quality assurance, hygiene and food safety standards.
