Sugar buyers are being stung by fraudsters offering consignments of non-existent sugar via the Internet, the International Chamber of Commerce has warned.

Its Commercial Crime Services department says that some websites are using “supermarket sales tactics” to advertise cargoes of sugar that never arrives, leaving unwary buyers who pay advances out of pocket. The unit has released information on how to spot fake offers. These include references to “Grade A” sugar, which does not actually exist, and references to “sparkling white” colouring, which is not an industry term.

The ICC has warned buyers to become familiar with the terms and conditions of  legitimate sugar contracts and if not, have all documents and offers checked by its commercial crime team.
