Legislation to regulate the amount of salt, fat, sugar and other unhealthy ingredients in manufactured foods may have to be introduced, according to a report by the World Health Organisation.

The World Health Report examines the 20 biggest health-risks, how they affect disease, disability and death, and how to reduce their impact.


Food and drink consumption are involved in many of the top twenty, which include malnutrition, alcohol consumption and obesity.


WHO director general Dr Gro Bruntland noted that the UK has successfully reduced the salt content in bread and many processed foods, and should consider doing the same with sugar.


Bruntland also suggested that consumers be provided with accurate and easily understandable labels concerning fat content.
