Mars Inc subsidiary Wrigley is investing RUB600m (US$10m) in modernising its manufacturing facility in St Petersburg, Russia, to support the launch of a “Russian-developed” Juicy Fruit chewing gum product.

Wrigley Russia supply director Andris Salminsh said each packet of the new Juicy Fruit Minis comprises 23 chewing gum pieces featuring three flavours.

Salminsh said the product is being rolled out in Russian supermarkets this summer.

Work at the plant is part of “a series of modernisation and sustainability projects” at the site, Salminsh said. The projects also form part of an overall investment agreement between Wrigley and the city of St Petersburg, which includes long-term commitments by Wrigley to support educational initiatives relating to community health and environmental issues.

Salminsh said: “By launching a new Juicy Fruit product, not only does the company make long-term investments in new production technologies, but it also contributes to the development of the food industry and chewing gum production in Russia.”

St Petersburg governor Georgy Poltavchenko said: “We fully support and encourage Wrigley’s projects either in production or social responsibility.” He said the city considered Wrigley to be “one of the leaders of socially responsible businesses in the region” – and he praised the firm’s successful completion of a major waste recycling project that sees “zero waste from the facility going to landfill sites”.
