Japanese probiotics company Yakult booked an increase in third-quarter sales and earnings driven by strong overseas growth.
In a regulatory filing today (30 January), Yakult revealed group-wide sales, including the contribution of Yakult’s pharmaceuticals business, rose 6% to JPY279.9bn in the three month period.
Like many Japanese food firms, Yakult is growing its international businesses to offset sluggish domestic consumption. Revenue generated overseas by Yakult’s food business climbed 20% to JPY105.97bn. Domestic food sales edged up, rising to JPY153bn from JPY152bn in the year-ago period.
Operating profit was up 15.9% to JPY29.49bn on stronger margins. Net profit rose 16.2% to JPY21.55bn.
