Dairy Farmers of America to shutter Vermont plant

DFA said around 80 jobs will be affected by the closure of its St. Albans facility.

The Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) cooperative in the US has revealed plans to close its St. Albans facility in the state of Vermont.

DFA said in a statement that the St. Albans Creamery is due to shutter its doors on 17 August, affecting around 80 workers.

Production at the adjacent plant at St. Albans has currently been halted ahead of the creamery closure, the company said.

“We are grateful to this team for their hard work and dedication, and this decision is not a reflection of their performance,” DFA added.

“DFA is committed to supporting those impacted with resources and additional support services during this time. Both the plant and store have been foundational parts of the St. Albans community for generations. We know this news is difficult for our employees, their families, and the broader Vermont community.”

Milk processed at the St. Albans site will be transferred within DFA’s network, although the locations were not identified in the statement.

Led by president and CEO Dennis Rodenbaugh, DFA is owned by around 9,000 farmers with a total of 84 plants and 4,809 dairy farms, according to its website.

It houses 37 farmer-owned brands such as TruMoo, Dean's and Keller's.

“This was not a decision made lightly and reflects broader operational and network changes needed to best serve our farmer-owners and customers,” DFA said. “We recognise the deep local connections to these operations.”

Last year, DFA acquired W&W Dairy, a US manufacturer of Hispanic cheese products based in Monroe, Wisconsin. The deal complemented the co-op’s existing La Vaquita dairy brand, known for its Hispanic cheeses, cremas, and drinkable yogurts.

Also in 2025, DFA bought Winona Foods’ Lineville facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin, which produces processed cheeses, cheese sauces, cheese spreads, and non-dairy sauces and condiments.

However, in 2024 another DFA plant was terminated. The Goshen site in Indiana was closed due to long-term changes in milk production and demand. The move was part of the co-op's strategy to “optimise capabilities” across its network.
