Ireland’s East Coast Bakehouse has been snapped up by Danish cakes and biscuit manufacturer Bisca.

East Coast Bakehouse, which is based in Drogheda, County Louth, will become a “standalone” subsidiary of Bisca’s international business, according to a statement.

Financial terms of the deal, which becomes effective from today (1 May), were not disclosed.

The Irish business was set up in 2016. It produces its own brands - The Bakehouse and The Home of Irish Biscuits - and private label for major retailers in the UK and Ireland such as Tesco, Asda and the discounter Lidl.

Exporting to 15 markets, East Coast Bakehouse is also a co-manufacturer operating out of its single factory in Drogheda near Dublin.

Kristian Walsøe, the CEO of Bisca, said: “East Coast Bakehouse’s products are an excellent fit with our portfolio and complement what we already offer. They have a strong presence in Ireland and the UK, while we have a solid position in the Nordics and Northern Europe, creating a strong combined geographic footprint.

“At the same time, they operate a modern and well-established production set-up that we can build upon.”

Bisca is owned by the Danish private-equity firm Erhvervsinvest, which acquired the business in 2024 from Norwegian food group Scandza.

The manufacturer of cakes, cookies and biscuits traces its roots to 1890 and has a royal warrant in Denmark. Its brands include Karen Volf, Karen’s Bakery, All in One and Mon.

Bisca claims to be a “market leader” in Denmark and supplies markets in the Nordics, Northern Europe and North America.

“We are delighted to team up with Bisca, who were from the early stages identified as an ideal new strategic partner to help maintain and accelerate the exciting growth momentum behind East Coast Bakehouse,” David Carey, the company’s chief commercial officer, said in the statement.

“The deal will bring new opportunities and new volume to our business and our retail and supply partners.”

East Coast Bakehouse will retain the facility in Drogheda, with Bisca-Erhvervsinvest to provide “new investment to fund and accelerate future growth”.
