Mars is cutting jobs in its US snacking business as part of changes to its office network in the country.
In a statement to Just Food, the owner of Snickers and M&M's said it will be “sunsetting” a site in Newark in New Jersey by December 2027.
The closure follows what Mars described as a “comprehensive review” of its North American office footprint. The move is intended to support “long-term growth” and “strengthen our operations in key locations across North America”.
A New Jersey WARN notice filed in July shows Mars plans to let go 307 workers in Newark, with an effective date of 16 October.
“We recognise the impact this will have on our associates in Newark and are committed to supporting them through this transition, including providing relocation opportunities and support where appropriate,” Mars said.
The company added it will continue investing in New Jersey, including innovation and manufacturing work in Hackettstown.
The Newark closure comes months after Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Mars Snacking announced an expansion of the company’s global headquarters in Chicago.
Under that plan, Mars said it would create 600 new jobs. At the time, Mars Snacking global president Andrew Clarke said: “Chicago has long been a hub for our business, and now it is our official home for our North America region and our Accelerator Division – firmly establishing our legacy and our future together.”
Earlier this month, Mars-owned Nature’s Bakery disclosed plans to close its Hazelwood, Missouri manufacturing plant by September 2027, with production shifting to other facilities and 345 job cuts scheduled in phases.
In April, Mars proposed proposed closing a pet-food plant in Germany, affecting around 110 employees, while in November last year it unveiled plans to shut a Ben’s Original factory in Belgium, putting about 80 roles at risk.
At the same time, Mars has continued to invest in sites.
In May, the company said it was investing £190m in its Slough factory in the UK through 2028 to expand manufacturing, digital capabilities, sustainability projects and workforce upskilling.
