UK dairy firm All Things lands in US in first overseas push

The UK dairy start-up is launching three grass-fed butter SKUs in Whole Foods Market with a new investor on board.

All Things has made its first move outside the UK with a launch in the US at Whole Foods Market.

Coinciding with the launch of three butter SKUs across the Atlantic, All Things has a new investor on board in the shape of US-based Spacestation Investments.

The undisclosed funding, described by All Things as a “secondary transaction”, builds on the £3.6m ($4.2m today) secured earlier this year in a round led by London-based The Equity Studio, alongside Access Industries and Active Partners.

Set up in 2023 by chef Thomas Straker and entrepreneur Toby Hopkinson, who is CEO, All Things has since extended its butter range into cottage cheese.

Hopkinson said: “The last 12 months have changed the scale of the business significantly. We’ve grown quickly in the UK, moved into new dairy categories and shown that the attention around All Things can translate into real retail demand.

“Bringing Spacestation onto the cap table at this point makes sense for where we’re heading. They understand consumer brands built at the intersection of product, creators and culture, and bring valuable US experience as we establish the brand in the market.”

All Things’ grass-fed butter range rolls out in 500 Whole Foods stores this month featuring salted, unsalted and garlic and herb varieties, all priced at $5.99 across various formats.

In the UK, the company has listings in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose, along with online retailer Ocado.

All Things said it is on target to realise revenue growth of around “5.5x year-on-year”, but declined to disclose current figures.

Twelve months since broadening its range to include cottage cheese, the business is looking to achieve more than 10,000 retail listings in the UK this year.

“The move into Whole Foods Market now takes All Things butter into a second major market, putting the brand’s founding product on shelves nationally in the US for the first time,” the company said.

“Growth reflects a broader ambition to build a modern dairy brand across multiple categories, with its growing UK business providing the foundation for international expansion.”

All Things confirmed the butter will made in the UK and shipped to the US, where it has engaged a local partner in cutting, wrapping and packaging.

"The EU will be on the roadmap but the US is a key focus at present," a spokesperson said.

On Just Food, alongside the daily diet of news, analysis and interviews on the website, we have a quarterly digital magazine in which we dig into some of the hot topics facing the sector.

The latest edition, out now, has as its cover story a look at how snack makers are adjusting to the rise of GLP-1 drugs.

“In no way do we see GLP-1 as the end of snacking,” Bosco Fonts, the CEO of Cerealto, told Just Food. “On the contrary, snacking is the unlikely winner of GLP-1.” Is he right?

The issue also explores the questions facing Big Food as some of the major names in the industry talk up their efforts on regenerative agriculture, while we also weigh up the development of the alt-milk market in Japan.

The magazine includes an interview with French dairy giant Bel about its plans to grow in the US, the Laughing Cow maker’s largest market.

And we speak to the founders of Biomel Gut Health about why they believe the UK plant-based business can successfully ride the interest in gut-health seen in the country.
