United Petfood has expanded its US footprint with the acquisition of another production plant from Wellness Pet Company.

The dry pet-food site is located in Decatur in Arkansas, the Belgian company said. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

United Petfood said the deal represents another “important step” in its “long-term” growth strategy for North America.

CEO Dries Eeckhout added: "The Decatur site gives us additional capacity and flexibility to respond to our customers’ needs. It is another important step in strengthening our production footprint across North America.

“By expanding our local presence, we can combine the advantages of local production with the expertise and capabilities of our international network of pet kitchens, enabling us to continue growing alongside our customers.”

Alongside the transaction, the two companies entered into a “long-term” supply agreement.

Two years ago, United Petfood bought Wellness Pet Company's facility in Mishawaka in Indiana.

The Decatur site will become United Petfood’s third production plant in North America.

The third is in Drummondville in Quebec, which the company acquired from Legault Group in April, marking its entry into Canada.

United Petfood also expanded its manufacturing network in Turkey in March. It partnered with Turkish company Lider Petfood to acquire a dry pet-food factory in Kırklareli, western Turkey, from Maya Company Pet Food.

Private-label supplier United Petfood produces dry and wet pet food, biscuits and snacks for cats and dogs.

The group operates production facilities across Europe, including in the UK, France and Poland. It exports to more than 110 countries and employs over 3,500 staff.

Just Food has asked Wellness Pet Company for comment on the deal
