The Italian government, retailers and producers have concluded negotiations that could see the price of pasta pushed back until the end of the year.

“There are the prerequisites and conditions necessary to reduce the price of pasta,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Economic Development told just-food this afternoon (12 November).


The Ministry has been holding meetings with key stakeholders, including food producers and retailers. It has been increasing pressure on manufacturers and retailers to pass savings made by declining raw materials costs on to consumers.


Producers and retailers will be entering into fresh negotiations to renew contracts in the next year and these prices are likely to be linked to commodity prices. However, the Ministry said this measure would act as a “bridge” between next year’s anticipated lower prices and current highs. 


“With the economic challenges [we are facing] consumers cannot wait for the conclusion of commercial negotiations. Cost savings should be passed along with haste,” the spokesperson added.
