Germany’s Federal Cartel Office has launched an investigation into competition in the country’s grocery retail sector.

With Germany’s top four retailers – Schwartz Group, Aldi, Edeka and Rewe – controlling 85% of the sector, the Bundeskartellamt has indicated that it will examine the effect that this has on the grocery retail market and supply chain.

“We will be looking at market dominance and the impact that this may have on consumers as well as suppliers and small retailers,” a spokesperson for the competition watchdog revealed.

The authority will investigate whether leading retailers benefit unfairly from purchasing advantages as well as the consequences of these advantages on market competition.

Announcing the move, the Bundeskartellamt emphasised that it will examine the sector as a whole and was not focusing its investigation on any particular retailer.
