Young’s Seafood has insisted its decision to cancel investment at a site in Fraserburgh will “not have any negative impact” on employment prospects or plans to expand its other plant in the Scottish town.

In June, the seafood processor announced plans to invest GBP2m (US$3.3m) at the Kilron facility – which comprises two buildings – to create a “centre of excellence” for white fish processing, in addition to its “existing capabilities” in value-added, ready-to-eat seafood.

However, Young’s will not press ahead with the investment. Speaking to just-food, a spokesperson said “a detailed site investigation of the available utilities” discovered “a major supply issue with the substation” supplying the Kilron site. As a result, the planned investment “would have required three times the current electrical supply to the site”.

Young’s will now invest in its Watermill Road site in Fraserburgh with Kilron being an “interim solution” until the building work has been completed. The move will see whitefish processing and packing consolidated at the one site. The Kilron site will remain open and Young’s is “currently investigating the possibility of alternative uses for the two buildings.”

“This revised plan does not have any negative impact on either the scale of investment to be made in Fraserburgh or the associated employment prospects,” the spokesperson said.
