Mondelez International is trialling paper packaging free of laminates, foils or plastics in New Zealand.

The US-based snacking and confectionery powerhouse is testing the “durability and effectiveness” of paper packaging when being transported with its Cadbury Energy bar. It will also gauge consumer feedback with free samples offered in the Westfield Newmarket in Auckland on Saturday, 21 December.

The packaging is 100% recyclable and uses sustainably-sourced paper. Mondelez said it is the first time the company has incorporated paper wrapping, adding many products on the market that have already done so also include a thin plastic film.

Mondelez outlined an objective in 2018 to make all of its packaging fully recyclable by 2025 as part of the Cadbury chocolate maker’s strategy for achieving a so-called “circular packaging economy” and a step toward its long-term vision for “zero-net waste packaging”. And almost a year ago, the company joined a new initiative called Loop launched by US-based recycling firm TerraCycle to combat the use of plastics.

Cara Liebrock, the managing director for Mondelez in New Zealand, commented on the latest initiative: “We are committed to making 100% of our packaging recyclable by 2025. While Cadbury is enjoyed by millions of people around the world, we’re excited to be able to do this innovative trial here in New Zealand.

“Given this is a world-first for us and the material is at the leading edge of packaging innovation, we’re committed to finding innovative solutions to the sustainability challenges facing the planet and this trial is a great example of this.”
