US wholesale giant Costco is set to take on Australia in 2009.

The company is planning to open its first 12,000-14,000 square metre store in Melbourne’s Docklands area.

Costco is currently awaiting approval to begin construction and it is expected that this will be granted later this year.

Known for its no-frills approach and discounting on bulk purchases, Costco will increase competition in the discount end of Australia’s grocery sector.

Australian shoppers will pay a membership fee of A$50 (US$46.95) to shop at Costco.
