Australian scientists claim to have developed the world’s first all-natural low glycemic index (GI) cane sugar.
A$5.4m (US$3.72m) Australian and Queensland government research budgets helped Australian sugarcane technology company Horizon Science develop this LoGiCane product, available under the CSR brand.
It sweetens like sugar with naturally occurring antioxidants and no chemical additives, colourings or preservatives, Horizon claimed.
According to independent testing by SUGIRS (the Sydney University Glycemic Index Research Service), LoGiCane has a GI of 50, while standard refined white sugar has a GI of 65 (on average).
This index ranks carbohydrates according to their blood glucose effect, an important health issue, especially for diabetics.
