The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will not oppose George Weston Food’s acquisition of Cripps Nubake Pty Ltd, which operates a plant bread baking business in Tasmania, and Tasmanian Flour Mills Pty Ltd, which operates the only mill in Tasmania.

ACCC chairman, Graeme Samuel said today: “The ACCC explored concerns regarding the acquisition of the sole local flour producer in Tasmania by George Weston Foods. George Weston Foods will largely inherit Cripps Nubake’s market shares in the bread and bakery snacks markets.”

“Further, the ACCC was satisfied that it is viable to import flour into Tasmania from the mainland,” he said. “In view of these factors, the ACCC considered that the acquisition would be unlikely to substantially lessen competition in the markets for bread, bakery snacks or flour in Tasmania.”
