Concerns over a further narrowing of the Australian retail sector has prompted the National Association of Retail Grocers of Australia (NARGA) to add its voice to demands that checks are placed on the unfettered growth of supermarket majors Woolworths and Coles Myer.


As the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) made its decision, released today on whether to allow Woolworths to buy up a large number of Franklin’s stores, the association lobbied extensively. It argued that the sale of the stores must be instrumental in creating a third force in the sector, not merely boosting the already extensive market shares of the two giants.
