Dieticians at St Vincent’s Mercy Private Hospital in Victoria believe that evidence can be found to support the hypothesis that omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can reduce depression.
Found primarily in seafood, walnuts and soybean oil, omega 3 acts on fatty-acid membrane tissue in the brain in such a way as to suggest that it can affect the mood and behaviour.
While the theory has not yet been proven scientifically, staff at the hospital believe that it is supported by the direct measure of fatty acids in people suffering from depression. Diets low in omega 3 appear to increase depression.
