The French supermarket group Carrefour’s Belgian subsidiary Carrefour Belgium is to restructure its operations, closing 16 stores and cutting 900 jobs.

The job cuts will only affect wholly-owned stores, and not franchisees, the company said.

Carrefour said its GB supermarket chain is facing heightened competition and that salaries are growing ahead of sales. The retailer said that this situation was no longer tenable.

In spite of significant investment over the past few years, the company said only a small improvement in sales and profitability was achieved.

Carrefour operates 280 GB supermarkets in Belgium, along with 56 Carrefour hypermarkets.
