Brazilian food giant Brasil Foods is set to build a margarine plant in Vitória de Santo Antão in the state of Pernambuco.

When operating at full capacity, the BRL140m (US$76m) factory is expected to create 150 direct and 350 indirect jobs, the company said yesterday (29 November). It forecasts that the 38,000 sq mt plant will have a capacity of 8,000 tons of industrialised meats per month.

A spokesperson from Brasil Foods said: “The project is designed to meet the significant and growing demand in the region with gains in the cost of production and distribution and permitting the company to offer products at competitive prices.”

Work at the site is expected to begin in January and operations to commence in January 2013. The company estimates that the unit will be generating annual sales of BRL450m by 2015.
