The recent decree signed by Brazilian Vice President Jose Alencar, allowing the planting of genetically modified soybeans, has been labelled “unconstitutional” by Attorney General Claudio Fontelles.

Fontelles filed a request asking the Supreme Court to overrule the decree, claiming that allowing the planting of GM soybeans without carrying out an environmental study was unconstitutional, reported Dow Jones International News.

The National Farm Workers Confederation had earlier filed a similar lawsuit, as had the Green Party.

The recent ruling allows only farmers who already have GM soybeans to plant them, and prohibits their sale to farmers in states other than the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, where many farmers already grown GM soybeans.
