The proposal to label genetically modified ingredients in products destined for sale abroad will cost Brazil international competitiveness, the National Confederation of Agriculture has said.


According to a report in Agência Brasil, Gilman Viana Rodrigues, NCA vice president of international affairs, has calculated that the change will add 10% to the sectors production costs.


The Brazilian Minister of Environment Marina Silva has announced that Brazil will defend the expression of ‘it contains’ in the Cartagena Protocol. The question of whether the labelling of GMOs will have to include information on production, transportation and storage is currently under negotiation.
