France-based bakery group Brioche Pasquier is reportedly set to close an ageing plant in Spain.

The closure of the site in Recondo de Irun has been widely reported in the media and is due to be shut down in 2022. The works council at the Brioche Pasquier Recondo facility said the company’s management had informed them of the plan after conducting consultations over the continued viability of the plant.

The plan to close Recondo de Irun first surfaced in 2016, before initial talks with the 160 employees took place in April last year, according to media reports. Brioche Pasquier claims there are limited avenues to expand the plant given its is located in a residential area, while it also said the manufacturing equipment is outdated.

Brioche Pasquier has two factories in Irun. The Recondo site in question located on the banks of the Bidasoa River and was acquired by the company in 2001. The other is in the district of Ventas and will remain open for business.

Brioche Pasquier plans to transfer production to Ventas over the next three years, and while media reported the 160 workers will be unaffected, it is unclear whether any jobs will be lost in the process. The company did not respond to a request from just-food for more details.

The workers council, meanwhile, has criticised the planned closure, and has called on the company to look again at the plans and organise a meeting to discuss employment options, along with “a business project that guarantees a future based on the viability and quality of the employment of the workforce”.
